The Last Song on the Album

The last song on the album
Is always the final farewell note
To a singles collection strung together.

The last song on our album
Are these goodbye lyrics,
Like heartstrings sewn together.

I gave you much more than a thousand
Words to a musical not finished yet—
I couldn’t rhyme it right with you, and
A little bit of your like is not a lot of love to get.

The last of the past that I’m letting go of,
After a hand, head and heart wrung dry,
Are a spirit and soul once made whole
By poetry and prose I wrote with love.

And I loved sharing my life tracks with you,
Kind of romanticizing like some Romeo,
Sort of sounding off in stereo…
But this is the last line of the last song, too.
